Job Statement

The APC Engineer is a specialist who masters Metso Outotec APC technology. His/her main activity is the implementation of APC systems and advanced sensor systems in his/her dedicated geographical area. The APC Engineer is part of the global team of Process Optimization and may be working on projects outside of his/her market area. He/she has project management responsibilities on some of the projects in which he/she is involved.

The job requires a very good understanding of both the clients’ process and of advanced process control and vision technology. It is primarily a technical position that requires travelling, domestic and internationally. It also includes management responsibilities. The APC engineer spends a significant part of his/her time with customers during the implementation of the contracts, and must be able to establish a good and mastered communication with customers.

Job Duties and responsibilities

Is responsible for the implementation of APC systems and advanced sensing systems, at remote sites in his/her dedicated area, and possibly all over the world, until client’s satisfaction is achieved.
Monitors APC or advanced sensing systems in his/her dedicated area from his/her office, via remote computer access to the client’s sites
Runs training courses for customers as necessary
Works at his/her office and at customer’s site to design, configure, install and commission APC systems hosted by the software
Works at his/her office to design, configure and test vision systems and sound analysis systems, and at customers ‘sites to install and commission the systems
Works closely with the Market area manager of his/her dedicated market area
Coordinates his/her work with other APC engineers from the global APC team on the projects where he/she is involved
Is responsible for his/her project management duties (forecast, organization, planning, communication, reporting, invoicing)
Is responsible for communication with customers on the projects where he/she acts as Project Manager
Writes reports, project documentation and participates to writing product documentation
Provides support to customers in his/her dedicated area
Travels frequently (both domestic and international)
Other miscellaneous duties and/or other special projects as required

Comply with established HSE systems policies and procedures

Providing a clean, health and safe work environment for all employees, visitors and sub-contractors
Ensuring documented management systems for HSE
Ensuring Metso complies with the relevant state HSE legislation(s) by adhering to established company HSE policy and guidelines
Assisting in the preparation of rehabilitation program for all reporting employees injured at work
Ensuring the company’s risk management program is maintained
Ensuring the HSE management systems are monitored / reviewed
Consulting with employees and all HSE matters affecting the work place
Participate in HSE management review meetings as required

Authority

Makes decisions on projects (organization, technical content) as a project manager, on site and at the office in his/her dedicated area
Can interact with customers as a recognized professional and decision maker on his/her projects when required
Coordinates his/her work with other APC engineers as a Project Manager

Qualifications and experience

Essential:
Bachelors or Master’s Degree or PhD in Metallurgy, Mineral processing, Chemical Engineering, Electrical Engineering/process control, or related field
Technical experience in mineral processing and process control
Very good knowledge of computer configuration and use
Fluency in English communications
Knowledge and use of Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint and Outlook
Must be self-motivated
Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
Must be willing to travel both domestically and internationally up to an average of 40% of the time
Strong analytical/problem solving skills. Demonstrate creativity and innovation in day-to-day work
Ability to take direction and work as a team to solve problems and complete work for clients
Must be able to travel by motor vehicle and commercial flights
Must be able to pass random medical and drug and alcohol tests

Desirable:
Experience as APC engineer or equivalent
Knowledge of his/her dedicated area mining industry
Relevant industry experience required (mineral processing, possibly cement industry or other process industry)
Management or supervisory ability
Knowledge of Metso Outotec APC software or competitor’s software
Plant optimization experience using expert systems (rule based control), model predictive control (MPC) and online dynamic mathematical models
Knowledge of OPC, DCOM, Modbus and other communication protocols

Skills and abilities

Fluency in computer configuration use
Academic knowledge and experience in advanced process control of mineral processing plants and/or optimization using expert systems (rule based control with fuzzy logic), model predictive control (MPC) and possibly online dynamic mathematical models
Communicate fluently in English
Excellent verbal and written communications skills
Develop strong trusting relationships to gain support and achieve results
Some sense of leadership and command
Manage multiple conflicting priorities in a fast-paced environment
Work in an environment with international objectives
Ability to understand issues domestically and internationally and communicate effectively with clients

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit, use hands and fingers, reach with hands and arms and talk and hear
The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk and climb or balance, including long periods of standing. Movements through industrial workshops and mining environments
Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision, peripherical vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus
Visual acuity is required to read and produce accurate materials
Use of keyboards, telephone, copiers
