Project Overview and Role :

Indonesia’s Vision sets the goal for Indonesia to transition from aresource-based economy towards an advanced service, technology, andknowledge-based economy by the centenary of its independence .

The- National Long Term Development Plan emphasizes the urgency ofIndonesia’s human resource development to fully realise goals.

Faced however with persistent low student performance that is emblematicof a learning crisis, significant improvement in student learning will berequired to reach Indonesia’s goals.

Government of Indonesia (GoI) hasstarted an ambitious program of education reforms. Successive educationministers have set out to modernise the education system through reforming thenational curriculum and teaching and assessment approaches, to produce citizenswith strong foundational skills, open minds, and inclusive values.

  • Australia is a long-term supporter of the Indonesian basic educationsector, with continuous investments supporting education quality improvementsfor the past two decades, including through the INOVASI program (Phase 1-;
  • Phase 2 -) that focused on supporting acquisition ofliteracy and numeracy foundational skills in early grades classrooms;

exploringlocal problems and solutions; and generating evidence to inform governmentpolicy development and practices.

This third phase of INOVASI (-) builds upon the existingprogram’s approach and lessons learned and takes the focus on the developmentof foundational skills through to the end of the primary grades.

Phase 3 willengage with priority issues of Australia’s development policy : gender equality,effective inclusion of children with a disability, responses to the climatechange challenge in education.

It will focus on the challenge of policyimplementation and the gaps that exist between national policies and practicesat district and school levels, and use the well attested-success of INOVASI’slocal problem-based approach to continuously support policy development foreffective fit between policy and implementation context.

The Program is implemented by Palladium on behalf of DFAT.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

Purposeof the Position :

Interpreters / Translators for INOVASI Phase 3 will be responsible for taskedwith the responsibility of translating written communication and interpretingspoken communication between English and Bahasa Indonesia, including in operations engagement with theMinistry of Religious Affairs (MoRA),Ministry of Education, Culture, Researchand Technology (MoECRT) and Bappenas.

Some tasks may involve travel tolocations outside of Jakarta..

Workingwith children

Duties : Under the direction of CommunicationsOfficer and / or the relevant document author, the Interpreters / Translators will :

  • Translate written communication (which may include but is not limited to reports, plans, advertising, slide decks, website content) from English to Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Indonesia to English;
  • Ensure clarity, accuracy and consistency in all translations between English and Bahasa Indonesia;
  • Edit and proofread translated text to accurately reflect language;
  • Use dictionaries and glossaries for references during translation;
  • Consult with document authors on unknown terminology;
  • As required, provide simultaneous or consecutive interpretation services from English to Bahasa Indonesia and Bahasa Indonesia to English during internal and external meetings, which may include, but is not limited to, meetings, workshops, presentations, research, or survey activities.
  • As required, accompany and provide interpretation services to the INOVASI team during work related trips including to locations other than Jakarta;
  • Ensure that translations are prepared to schedule;
  • Other duties as required by the INOVASI team.

Required Qualifications :

The Interpreters / Translators will possess the following qualificationsand experience :

  • Degree in translation, linguistics, or relevant discipline;
  • NAATI qualifications or similar international credentials preferred;
  • Minimum of 7 years’ work experience as a translator / interpreter, preferably working on development programs and with knowledge of education terminology;
  • Advanced knowledge of the structure and content of both English and Bahasa Indonesia languages;
  • Experience with MS Office suite of tools;
  • Ability to prioritise, multitask, and work independently;
  • Ability to tailor tone and expressions to suit target audience;
  • Availability to work on a casual, on-call basis and to work within strict deadlines.
