Project Overview and Role:
Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Promoting Rural Incomes through Support for Markets in Agriculture (PRISMA) is a multi-year development program working to accelerate poverty reduction through inclusive economic growth. PRISMA adopts a market systems development approach by partnering with key stakeholders to improve agriculture market efficiency and sustainably benefit the poor. The program aims to achieve an income increase for a total of 1,000,000 smallholder farming households by 2023. It operates in six provinces of Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Papua, and Papua.
Market systems development works on changing the behaviour of market actors, especially farmers, through introducing new products and services. In the animal husbandry sector such as cattle, pigs, and poultry, PRISMA works through inputs product in bringing sustainable change to the market, one of them is promoting animal pharmaceutical products and good Animal Health management practice to boost cattle's productivity and thus experience increased income.
When foot and mouth disease (FMD) attacks animal husbandry ecosystem in Indonesia since early 2022, PRISMA has continued to focus on promoting good Animal Health practice to prevent and combat FMD outbreak. In October 2022, PRISMA engaged in a partnership with PT Medion Ardhika Bhakti, one of the leading animal pharmaceutical and farm equipments distributors in Indonesia. The purpose of this partnership is to promote good Animal Health management practices with animal medications & vitamins. One of its main activities is rural assessment to optimise Medion's distribution channels and improve rural strategy in order to expand Medion reach to smallholder farmers in rural areas in Central Java, East Java, and West Nusa Tenggara (NTB).
Primary Duties and Responsibilities:
The primary purpose of this assignment is to explore potential rural market for Beef Animal pharmaceutical products and to assist Medion in expanding rural distribution channels in West Nusa Tenggara. This exploration will include leading a team of field persons in conducting rural assessment and recruiting new retailers for Medion in East Lombok and Central Lombok of West Nusa Tenggara.
The expert is expected to provide these services, including but not limited to:
- Expert is expected to recruit his/her own field team (4-5 local people),
- Lead a team of field persons in conducting rural assessment to retailers and farmers and mapping potential new retailers for Medion,
- Compile field assessment findings and create the report
- Leading the field persons in connecting the potential new R2 retailers to existing R1 Medion, and build networking with these retailers during the process
- Liaise with Medion and PRISMA beef team in designing field assessment and periodically report work progress
- Liaise with Medion team in West Nusa Tenggara branch as needed
Essential skills and experience:
- Minimum bachelor's degree in any field. Having knowledge in rural market, Animal Health, or agribusiness is preferred.
- Demonstrates good networking skills in arranging field team and leadership skills in leading the field work.
- Having minimum 3 years experience in conducting field research, especially in agriculture market (farmers, agri retailers, etc).
- Excellent English and Indonesian language skills (verbal and written) and skills in Javanese language is preferred.
The term of the Expert's payment will be based on the outputs described in section 7 below. The service delivery timeline is expected to happen from January 2023 to March 2023. The Expert must submit the required deliverables and supporting documentation by the due date to indicate the work performed with high-quality results and approved by PRISMA and Medion.
