Project Overview and Role :

Australia-IndonesiaPartnership for Promoting Rural Incomes through Support for Markets inAgriculture (PRISMA) isa multi-year development program working to acceleratepoverty reduction through inclusive economic growth.

PRISMA adopts a marketsystems development approach by partnering with key-stakeholders to improveagriculture market efficiency and sustainably benefit the poor.

The programaims to achieve an income increase for a total of 1,, smallholder farminghouseholds by . It operates in six provinces of Central Java, East Java,West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Papua, and Papua.

Market systemsdevelopment works on changing the behavior of market actors, especiallyfarmers, through introducing benefiting products, services, and climate-smartinnovations.

In the animal husbandry sector such as cattle, PRISMA worksthrough inputs product in bringing sustainable change to the market, one ofthem is introducing a more nutrient-dense feed (concentrate).

This has beenhighlighted through ELCIA on its phase-1 beef sector in , to have apositive impact upon reducing intensity of greenhouse gas-producing processwithin the cattle.

Livestockproduction, primarily cows, is a major contributor to climate change as cowsproduce 14.5 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions.

Growth in cattlepopulation and production could represent an ongoing threat to the environmentdue to increased methane production as the number of animals increases.

PRISMAand Agcotech Australia Pty Ltd believe that small adjustments to what cows eatcan further reduce a large source of climate emissions.

This shared visioninspires both parties to conduct a Molasses Lick Block trial activity in thebeef and dairy cattle production system in East Java, Indonesia.

The purpose ofthe trial activity is to assess the production impact of the Molasses LickBlock (MLB) in a beef and dairy cattle production system in Indonesia.

Inparticular, the assessment will focus on 3 aspects that are reducing methane emissionsfrom cows, cattle performance (ADG for beef, and milk production and qualityfor dairy cattle) and business profitability.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities :

Themain purpose of this assignment is to ensure data of sufficient quality, toallow for further analysis upon the 3 aspects as well as publication of carbon offsetting.

The co-expert will support PRISMA and AgCoTech to locally monitor and supervisetrial conducts based on protocols, communicate progress of the trial monthlyand finally to ensure submission of trial records or data.

  • Leading field team and coordinating data collectors in 2 beef farms and 3 dairy farms located within East Java
  • Supervising input of baseline data (day 0) : age, sex, breed, 1st weight and MLB weight.
  • Quality control and monitoring input of these data :

By beef cattle data collector :

  • Feed intake by type and weight (to be recorded daily by the data collector and monitor weekly by the co-expert).
  • Beef cattle weighing 4 times (day0 / week1, week 4, week 7, week 10) to be recorded during co-expert visits.
  • Girth tape measurement of cattle if weighing by weight scale needs supporting data (to be recorded weekly during co-expert visits).
  • Molasses lick block weight (to be recorded weekly during co-expert visits).
  • Support AgCoTech’s qualified resource in laser operation on week 5 and week 8.

By Dairy Cattle data collector :

  • Feed intake by type and weight (to be recorded daily by the data collector, monitor weekly by the co-expert).
  • Dairy cattle milk production (to be recorded daily by the data collector, monitor weekly by the co-expert).
  • Farm milk quality result (to be recorded weekly by the co-expert in coordination with farms’ cooperatives)
  • Girth tape measurement of cattle (to be recorded weekly during co-expert visits).
  • Molasses lick block weight (to be recorded weekly during co-expert visits).
  • Ensuring appropriate application of molasses block.
  • Ensuring sample cattle are not being changed or switched during the trial.
  • Coordinating with farmers / data collectors, PRISMA & AgCoTech.
  • Maintain engagement with dairy cooperatives over milk quality testing.
  • Communicating updates as well as challenges over data intake to PRISMA or AgCoTech PIC weekly.
  • Organising a complete final compilation of raw data through excel or other agreed formats.
  • Coordinating vets’ or paravets’ services and purchases of required medicines along with farmers / data collectors, variably depending on the needs upon illness of subject cattle.

Required Qualifications :

Desirables criteria and experience :

  • In status quo, has relationship or has been in relationship with research team within faculty of animal husbandry or faculty of veterinary medicines amongst any University, preferably in Java.
