PRISMA - Rural MarketingExpert for Inclusive Promotional Activities (Consultant)

Project Overview and Role:

Australia-Indonesia Partnership for Promoting Rural Incomes through Support for Markets in Agriculture (PRISMA) is a multi-year development program working to accelerate poverty reduction through inclusive economic growth. PRISMA adopts a market systems development approach by partnering with key stakeholders to improve agriculture market efficiency and sustainably benefit the poor. The program aims to achieve an income increase for a total of 1,000,000 smallholder farming households by 2023. It operates in six provinces of Central Java, East Java, West Nusa Tenggara (NTB), East Nusa Tenggara (NTT), West Papua, and Papua. Market systems development works on changing the behaviour of market actors, especially farmers, through partnerships with private and public sectors to educate and introduce new products and services. In the livestock sector (cattle and pig), PRISMA focuses on feed as it influences 30% of dairy cow productivity while contributing to the total cost of farming up to 87%. It is proven that good quality feed can boost dairy cow productivity and milk quality with proper feed management.

Based on UGM's Dairy Market Research conducted in 2019, 95% of farmers in Central Java use the incorrect dosage of concentrate feed, and poor-quality feed due to self-mixing for their cattle. This situation has caused PT Nufeed, a PRISMA’s partner, to expand its market coverage to Central Java, with a focus on a few districts such as Boyolali, which has the highest dairy cattle population in the province. Nufeed, based in Grobogan, is a prominent feed producer in Indonesia that produces high-quality and affordable concentrate feed for dairy. Moreover, after engagement with PRISMA, Nufeed has expanded its business strategy by becoming more inclusive, including targeting farmers with disabilities, youth and women. A few experiments have been conducted with these farmer segments and the results were promising. These encourage the company to expand the model and share it with the government and industries for wider adoption.
